Super Eagles began their Group C campaign at the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations with a 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday night at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Fez, BSNSports.com.ng reports. 

While the result secured maximum points, the performance exposed several tactical and technical areas that head coach Eric Chelle may need to address as the tournament progresses.

With a crucial second group match against table-toppers Tunisia approaching, attention has turned to aspects of Nigeria’s play that require improvement if the team is to compete consistently at the highest level.

Goalkeeping Competition Needed

First-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali remains Nigeria’s undisputed starter, but his display against Tanzania highlighted moments of uncertainty that could prove costly in tighter encounters. Increased competition for the position may be necessary to raise performance levels and sharpen concentration as the tournament intensifies.

Full-Back Positions Require Greater Impact

Zaidu Sanusi and Bright Osayi-Samuel were limited in their attacking contributions from wide areas. Both players struggled to provide creativity or penetration when in possession and were hesitant to take on opponents. Defensively, their recovery pace could be tested against teams with quicker wingers, raising concerns ahead of stronger opposition.

Lack of Sharpness on the Counter-Attack

Nigeria’s counter-attacking play lacked the required speed and precision against Tanzania. Transitions from defence to midfield were often slow, allowing the opposition time to recover their shape. Against higher-quality sides, such inefficiency could blunt one of the Super Eagles’ traditional strengths.

Decision-Making in the Final Third

Winger Samuel Chukwueze was unable to consistently make decisive contributions in attacking situations. Improved decision-making—whether through timely passes to the striker or more accurate shooting—will be vital if Nigeria are to convert pressure into goals.

Composure in Front of Goal

Striker Victor Osimhen worked tirelessly but appeared frustrated at times, taking speculative shots and reacting visibly when passes failed to reach him. Greater composure and patience in front of goal will be essential, particularly in matches where chances are limited.

As Nigeria prepare to face Tunisia in their next Group C fixture, these areas are likely to be a focus for Chelle and his technical crew. Addressing these shortcomings could prove decisive in the Super Eagles’ pursuit of group supremacy and deeper progression in the tournament.
