Flying Eagles Emerge Champions Of 2022 WAFU Zone B U-20 Tournament

The Flying Eagles have emerged champions of the 2022 WAFU Zone B tournament in Niger Republic after thrashing Benin Republic 3-1 in the final on Friday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.


Flying Eagles went close to scoring a couple of times in the first half, as their chances could not count well due to resolute defence from Benin Republic.



The Flying Eagles however broke the deadlock in the 38th minute through a spot kick converted by Tolulope Ojo after a Beninoise defender handled the ball in the box in a desperate bid to stop the Nigerians opening the scoring.


Eagles goalkeeper Nathaniel Nwosu build performance was so high, and was all over the place but his defenders came to his rescue with a timely clearance.


 


Nigeria doubled their advantage when Remo Stars midfielder Tolulope Ojo shoot in a long range screamer in the 70th minute.


 

However, the sensational Midfielder add a brace, while Ibrahim Muhammad made it 3-0 as he lobbed the ball pass the Beninoise goalkeeper whose distribution was poor at that moment.


Benin got themselves a consolation goal six minutes to full time when Farid Eddu tapped in from close range but it was too little too late to salvage anything.


Nigeria, seven-time African champions, were worthy winners of the trophy. They started their campaign with a 2-0 spanking of tournament title holders and continental champions Ghana, before a 2-2 draw with Burkina Faso that took them to the last four. In the semi finals, they were stretched to the limit by an Ivorian team with a blistering pace and superb turn, but edged the tie 2-1 after extra time.


Nigeria have joined Senegal, 2018 and Ghana 2020 in the rank of past winners of the championship which started in 2018.


Nigeria and Benin Republic will fly WAFU B zone’s flag at the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
