Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu has said his players are ready for the WAFU B U20 tournament in Togo, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking with NFF TV in a one-on-one interview session at the team's final stage of preparations in Ikenne, Zubairu said it hasn't been easy so far for the team.
He revealed that they will prosecute Grade A friendly matches to further intensify preparations for the tournament.
"It has not been easy. We spent about three weeks in Abuja trying to sort out the team and, after that, the conditioning of the players. We are trying to see how to can start building the team.
"The team is very much ready. It's just for us to put some finishing touches and have a few Grade A matches before we move to Lome, Togo.
"We have an idea of our opponents. We have seen some of the matches they have played here in Africa and outside. That will help us to be able to prepare against them."
Flying Eagles will battle Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire in a three-team Group B, in their quest to defend the title they won in Niger Republic two years ago.
Hosts Togo will battle Ghana, Benin Republic and Niger Republic in Group A of the competition that is scheduled for 17th – 31st October.
The championship in Togo serves as the qualifying tournament for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations, from where the top-placed four teams will qualify to fly Africa’s flag at next year’s FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile.
