Nottingham Forest is set to conduct an internal investigation into the medical team's handling of Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi's injury, which on Sunday ultimately resulted in him being placed in an induced coma, BSNSports.com.ng has sourced from the Mirror of the UK.

Awoniyi sustained the injury during a 2-2 draw with Leicester City after colliding with a post while attempting to slide for the ball.

The medical staff attended to him but allowed him to continue playing, a decision that has received significant criticism in the aftermath.

On Monday, Awoniyi underwent surgery to repair a ruptured intestine due to severe abdominal injuries. Surgeons stabilized him by putting him in an induced coma, which helped to restrict his movement and regulate his heart rate.

The club has confirmed that he is now awake and recovering well. The club's experienced doctor, Dr. Prithish Shyam Narayan, along with other medical staff and coaches, will be questioned to provide the hierarchy at the City Ground with a comprehensive understanding of the events that transpired before any decisions are made.
