Former NBA Coach David Fizdale To Lead Nigeria’s D’Tigers

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has appointed former NBA coach David Fizdale as the new head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s basketball programme and enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The appointment, approved by the federation’s Technical Committee, forms part of the NBBF’s long-term strategy to build a world-class basketball structure capable of competing consistently at the highest international level.

According to the federation, Fizdale’s extensive experience in elite basketball management and coaching was a major factor in the decision. The former NBA head coach is widely recognised for his expertise in player development, leadership, team culture, and tactical management.

The NBBF said the appointment reflects its commitment to improving the technical capacity of its national teams while maximising basketball talent both within Nigeria and among players of Nigerian descent abroad.

NBBF President, Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, described Fizdale’s arrival as an important step in the federation’s vision for the future of Nigerian basketball.

“David Fizdale represents the level of leadership, professionalism, and basketball knowledge that aligns with our vision for the future of Nigerian basketball,” Kida said.

“His experience, relationships, and understanding of the modern global game will be invaluable as we continue building a programme capable of competing with the very best in the world.”

Kida added that Fizdale’s role would extend beyond managing the national team, noting that the federation expects him to contribute to coaching education, player development, and the overall technical advancement of basketball in Nigeria.

“Beyond the national team, we believe his presence will contribute significantly to player development, coaching education, and the continued growth of basketball in Nigeria. This is about building a sustainable future and creating an environment where Nigerian basketball can thrive globally for years to come,” he said.

In addition to leading D’Tigers in international competitions, Fizdale is expected to play a key role in developing coaching pathways and strengthening the broader basketball ecosystem in Nigeria.
