Former PSG Star Backs Lookman To Shine at Atlético Madrid

Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Godwin Okpara has welcomed Ademola Lookman’s move to Atlético Madrid, describing it as a major boost for both the player and Nigerian football, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Okpara believes the transfer represents a significant step forward in Lookman’s career, citing Atlético’s status among Europe’s elite clubs and their consistent presence on the continent’s biggest stage.

“It’s big news for Nigeria, and it’s good for the national team,” Okpara said. “Going to Atlético Madrid, one of the biggest teams in Europe and a side that regularly plays in the Champions League, is a step up for him. He is a very determined player, and I know he will fit into the team. I’m very happy for him.”

Lookman completed a permanent move to Diego Simeone’s side from Atalanta during the January transfer window, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. Atlético Madrid are understood to have paid €40 million to secure the services of the Nigerian international.

The forward joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022 and went on to enjoy an impressive spell in Italy, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists for La Dea across all competitions.

Prior to his time in Serie A, Lookman featured prominently in English football, with spells at Charlton Athletic, Everton, Fulham and Leicester City.
