Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has described representing Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the most defining moment of his football career, portraying the competition as a unifying celebration of African football and culture, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking in his role as an analyst on beIN SPORTS, Troost-Ekong reflected on the emotional and cultural weight of the tournament, particularly in light of Nigeria’s impressive run at the 2025 edition in Morocco.
He described AFCON as more than a football competition, calling it a “festival” that brings together elite players from across the globe and resonates deeply with fans across the continent.
Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria to a second-place finish at the 2023 tournament, said the experience remains unmatched in his career. Despite falling short of lifting the trophy, he emphasized that the journey itself was profoundly meaningful and remains a lasting personal highlight.
The defender further underscored the tournament’s vibrant atmosphere, noting its cultural richness and significance to Africans. He ranked AFCON above most of his career milestones, placing it even ahead of his participation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Reflecting on his leadership role, Troost-Ekong spoke about the responsibility of representing a nation on such a stage and the strong bond shared within the squad. He described his time with the team as both a privilege and a deeply rewarding experience, shaped by years of collective effort toward a common goal.
Troost-Ekong retired from international football in 2025, ahead of the AFCON tournament, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Super Eagles.
