Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Opens Up About His Coaching Internship In South Africa

Former Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has opened up on his ongoing coaching internship in South Africa as he begins a new chapter in his football career, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Akpeyi, who officially announced his retirement from professional football in December 2025 following his exit from Marumo Gallants, is currently undergoing a coaching internship with Premier Soccer League (PSL) side, TS Galaxy.

The former Nigerian international revealed that the internship is a compulsory requirement for his progression from the CAF C coaching licence to the CAF B Licence, which he is preparing to undertake.

Having already completed his CAF C Licence, Akpeyi explained that CAF regulations mandate an internship with a professional club before candidates can be admitted into the CAF B Licence programme a requirement that led to his placement at TS Galaxy.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Akpeyi expressed gratitude to the club’s leadership and technical crew for the opportunity.

“I think firstly I am grateful to the team, TS Galaxy, and most especially to the chairman of the team, Mr Tim Sukazi, for availing me the privilege of doing my internship with the team on short notice,” he said.

“I’m grateful to the head coach [Adnan Beganovic], the assistants and staff members for making the environment conducive for me to be able to do my internship.”

He further clarified that the internship is part of CAF’s structured coaching pathway.

“When you do your C licence, which I’ve done, before you do your B licence, you are required to do an internship with a professional team for some days before you can be granted access to the CAF B licence,” Akpeyi explained.

“So, I had to do my internship so that I can be granted access to do my B licence.”

Akpeyi also revealed that while the current internship covers general coaching duties, his long-term focus will be on goalkeeping development.

“It’s not particularly on the goalkeeping department, it’s overall coaching, but I’m going to be moving to the goalkeeping department during my B licence. For now, it’s just general coaching,” he added.

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper concluded by stating his ambition to specialise in goalkeeping coaching after completing his CAF B Licence, with the aim of using his experience to develop the next generation of goalkeepers.
