GHA 0-0 NGA: Three Costly Mistakes Eguavoen Made With Eagles Against Ghana
By: Blakcoin
The first leg of the Nigeria World Cup qualification game against Ghana was played on Friday night and the outcome of the game was not bad.
Nigeria Super Eagles have a lot of qualities on its team but still played like an average team against Ghana. The match which ended 0-0 got many Nigerians angry and criticism has started flying all around.
Friday below-average performance of the Super Eagles can only be traced back to the manager in charge of the team, Augustine Eguavoen.
Coach Eguavoen made some costly mistakes that would have made Nigeria lose their game at Kumasi. But fortunately, that didn't happen. Here are the mistakes the manager made:
1. Formation
Nigeria Super Eagles comprise high-profile players who are very good and professional in what they do. The team didn't do well as it performed during the AFCON tournament in January. This is because the manager failed in his duty to make up a formation that is best suitable for the quality of players he has on his team. Tonight, Iheanacho was only running around the pitch with no impact at all.
2. The substitution of Joe Aribo
Eguavoen removed Aribo from the Super Eagles midfield and everything went south thereafter. It was clear to everyone who watched the match that Aribo substitution could have been avoided. Iheanacho would have been the player to leave the pitch for Ighalo.
3. The early removal of the wingers (Simon & Chukwueze)
Eguavoen brought in Lookman and Emmanuel Dennis after he removed Chukwueze and Simon. This decision left Nigeria upfront to be uncreative right from the 70th minutes of the game till the final whistle was blown.
Eguavoen needs to learn how to use quality players on his team to defeat Ghana Black Stars on Tuesday, if not, Nigeria may not qualify for the upcoming World Cup.
