Ghana Begin Search For New Coach As Queiroz Quits After World Cup Exit

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as head coach of Ghana's national team after just three months in charge, following the Black Stars' elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician stepped down after Ghana suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, ending the country's World Cup campaign, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Queiroz was appointed in April after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) parted ways with Otto Addo. During his brief spell in charge, he guided the Black Stars through the World Cup, recording a victory over Panama, a draw against England, and a defeat to Croatia in the group stage before the knockout-stage loss to Colombia.

In a statement shared on social media after his resignation, Queiroz reflected on his tenure with pride while expressing his desire to have achieved more.

"I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions."

The veteran coach also stressed that Ghana's future success depends on creating the right structures away from the pitch.

"The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana's extraordinary football talent."

Queiroz expressed gratitude to the GFA leadership, players, technical staff and supporters for their support throughout his tenure.

"To my President and Board, thank you for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars.

"To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team.

"To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football's greatest stage."»

The Ghana Football Association is expected to appoint a new head coach before the Black Stars reconvene in September for the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia.
