Ghana FA Shortlists Former Super Eagles Target For Black Stars Coaching Role

The Ghana Football Association has identified Tom Saintfiet as one of the leading candidates to take over as head coach of the Ghana national football team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The position became vacant earlier this week following the dismissal of Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties after a run of five consecutive defeats. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, the federation faces increasing urgency to appoint a successor.

Ghana are scheduled to play an international friendly against the Panama national football team on June 18, a fixture that could serve as an early test for any incoming coach.

Saintfiet, currently in charge of the Mali national football team, has strengthened his reputation in African football in recent years. He guided Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with his team noted for its defensive discipline and tactical structure.

The Belgian tactician previously enjoyed a successful spell with the Gambia national football team, leading them to their first-ever AFCON appearance in 2021 and an impressive quarter-final finish in their debut tournament.

Saintfiet has also attracted interest from the Nigeria Football Federation in the past, before the body appointed Gernot Rohr. The coach has since indicated openness to managing Nigeria, underlining his growing profile on the continent.

His current contract with Mali is reportedly nearing expiration and is unlikely to be renewed, potentially making him available for a new role. However, financial considerations could complicate negotiations, with reports suggesting he earns approximately €20,000 per month.

The Ghana FA is expected to assess multiple candidates, weighing experience, tactical philosophy, and financial implications before making a final decision. The appointment is viewed as pivotal as Ghana seek to rebuild momentum ahead of the World Cup.

At the tournament, the Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside the England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama, presenting a challenging path in their bid to progress.
