Ghana U20 Coach Eyes Redemption Against Nigeria in WAFU Opener

 Head coach of Ghana’s U20 men’s national team, Desmond Ofei, has labeled Thursday’s WAFU Zone B U20 Championship opener against Nigeria as a defining moment in the Black Satellites' campaign.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Ofei expressed confidence in his side’s preparation ahead of the highly anticipated Group A clash, set for 15:00 GMT at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

 “The first game against Nigeria will set the tone for how this tournament will go,” Ofei stated. “We are fully aware of their quality and how hungry they are, but we are equally ready and focused.”

The regional rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria adds extra weight to the encounter, which serves as the opening match for both sides in a tightly contested three-team group also featuring Benin. With only two matches determining semi-final qualification, every point will prove crucial.

Ofei has spent recent months molding a disciplined and competitive squad, and believes home advantage could provide the necessary edge in what is expected to be a physically and tactically demanding encounter. “We’ve prepared well, and we’re calling on Ghanaians to come out and support the boys,” Ofei added. “The players are motivated, and we’re determined to start strong.”

Ghana will also be seeking redemption following their defeat to Nigeria in the final of the previous edition held in Togo. Thursday’s fixture presents an early opportunity for payback and a chance to assert dominance on home soil.

The Black Satellites, record winners of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations and 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup champions, are eyeing a return to continental prominence, starting with a successful outing in this year's WAFU tournament.
