Glitz, Glamour, and Recognition As 2024 FCT SWAN Week Ends On Friday

The VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, was the epicenter of glitz and celebration on Friday, December 13, 2024 as the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (FCT SWAN) hosted its 2024 Awards and Gala Night.
As the grand finale of the FCT SWAN Week 2024, the event honored individuals that have made significant contributions to sports development and journalism in the FCT.
The Gala Night brought together sports administrators, journalists, corporate stakeholders, and other dignitaries who gathered to celebrate the achievements of those driving the growth of sports in the country.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Kola Daniel, lauded FCT SWAN for its relentless efforts in promoting sports through quality reportage.
"This occasion reflects the importance of recognizing and appreciating those who contribute to the development of sports in Nigeria," he said.
"FCT SWAN has consistently been at the forefront of highlighting these contributions, and tonight is a testament to their commitment to excellence. The National Sports Commission is proud to associate with this initiative."
Dr. Barr Paul Edeh, Chairman of the Benue State Football Association, emphasized the role of sports journalists in shaping public perception of sports and athletes.
"Sports writers are the unsung heroes of the industry, capturing moments, inspiring fans, and holding stakeholders accountable. By organizing events like this, FCT SWAN ensures that their voices and efforts are acknowledged and celebrated," Edeh remarked.
Kayode Adeniyi, General Manager of NTA Sports and a former chairman of FCT SWAN, commended the association's growth over the years.
"I am proud of how far FCT SWAN has come in championing sports development. This Awards and Gala Night not only rewards excellence but also encourages all stakeholders to give their best to the sports industry," he noted.
The current Chairman of FCT SWAN, Kelechi Onwudiwe, recounted the importance of collaboration in his remarks.
"This Awards and Gala Night is more than just a celebration; it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our members, sponsors, and partners who made this event and the entire SWAN Week a success," Onwudiwe said.
The Chairman of the FCT SWAN Week Committee, Ms Anietie Patrick, reflected on the hard work behind the scenes.
"Organizing this event was a challenging yet rewarding experience. The smiles and recognition we see tonight make every effort worthwhile. I hope this serves as a motivation for everyone to keep contributing to the growth of sports in Nigeria," Patrick stated.
The Awards and Gala Night also celebrated individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to sports development and sports journalism.
Distinguished awardees included Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, President of the Nigeria Golf Federation; Mrs. Bose Ngozi Onwuegbu, CEO of BON Sports Promotion and Events Ltd; Sir Dr. Emeka Offor, Founder of the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation; Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission; and Honourable Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, among others.
Other honorees included Omon Isemede, Social Secretary of the Ladies Golf Section at IBB International Golf and Country Club Abuja; Major General Godwin Umelo (rtd), TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club Abuja; Sgt. Cynthia Maurice, the first military female professional golfer; Dr. Lami Onayi Ahmed, Vice President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria; Mr. Ali Peters, Vice Captain of TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club Abuja; Barr Babatunde Akintade, Chairman of Like-minds FC and Board Member of FCT FA; Joy Ikwue, Past Lady Captain of IBB International Golf and Country Club; and Lily Grace, CEO of Chat My Cause Initiative. Additionally, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Amadu (Mai Palace), Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, was recognized for his dedication to sports development at the legislative level.
The event was also graced by the presence of former Secretary General of National SWAN, Jude Opara; the current Secretary General of National SWAN, Ikenna Okonkwo; former Chairman of FCT SWAN, Chidoka Ndubueze and the Chief of Defence Staff, represented by Lieutenant Saheed Oladimeji.
