Golden Eaglets Set for Top-of-the-Table Clash Against Burkina Faso

By Niyi Busari

Nigeria’s U-17 men’s national team, the Golden Eaglets, have wrapped up preparations ahead of their crucial WAFU B U-17 Championship group stage encounter against Burkina Faso, scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 PM (Nigeria time) at the Stade Lycée Scientifique, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Eaglets come into the tie on the back of a commanding 4-1 victory over Benin Republic in their opening game, a result that secured their place in the semi-finals, following Benin’s elimination after two consecutive defeats.

Saturday’s match will determine which team finishes top of Group B, as both Nigeria and Burkina Faso are vying for the summit of the standings.

Focused Final Preparations

Ahead of the high-stakes encounter, the Golden Eaglets held a final training session on Friday at the National Polytechnic Field in Yamoussoukro, under the supervision of head coach Manu Garba and his technical crew.

The session, which lasted one hour, emphasized goalscoring drills, tactical defensive formations, and scenarios involving defending set-pieces and counter-attacks. All 20 squad members participated fully, showing no fitness concerns ahead of match day.

Confidence from the Camp

Following the training, the team attended a pre-match press conference at Stade Konan Banny, where Coach Garba and team captain David Edeh addressed the media.

Garba expressed satisfaction with his side’s opening performance, stating: “The boys gave a good account of themselves against Benin. We will keep improving with each match. There’s still more to come from this team.”

Captain Edeh also exuded confidence, saying he is ready to lead Nigeria to another strong showing:

“I feel better prepared and very motivated. We respect Burkina Faso, but we are focused on winning and topping the group.”

Nigeria will be aiming to maintain their momentum as they chase qualification for the 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, with this WAFU B tournament serving as the regional qualifying competition.
