Barely 3 years to the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2025 host, Guinea has shown no sign of seriousness in hosting the 35th edition, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Guinea was awarded AFCON 2023 hosting right in 2014 alongside Cameroon ( AFCON 2019) and Ivory Coast ( AFCON 2021).
After CAF stripped Cameroon from hosting the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations 2018, the former CAF President Ahmad Ahmad told Cameroon to accept to host the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Consequently, Ivory Coast, the original host of 2021, would host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and Guinea, the original host of 2023, would host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Guinea however rejected the proposal by CAF but later accept the 2025 edition in 2019 and also rejected the Senegal Co-Host proposal.
But After Eight years of being awarded the hosting right, Guinea does not seem ready to host the largest football tournament on the African continent.
With less than three years to the competition, no construction of infrastructures has so far been started by the authorities, while almost everything is to be built or rebuilt.
Just late last year, the country inaugurate the Organizing Committee on hosting 2025 AFCON and the commencement of visiting the proposed hosting cities where the construction of facilities are expected to take place.
Construction delay is one of the basic constraints to accomplishing the project objectives in Africa and Guinea won’t be able to meet up with the construction of 5 new stadiums and the renovation of one and the construction of Hotels, training facilities roads etc with the space of three years.
