Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has hailed Nigeria’s U-18 and U-20 male handball teams following their impressive performances at the IHF Trophy Zone 3 in Lomé, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Olopade made the remarks on Monday while receiving the victorious teams at his office in Abuja, noting that their success has renewed confidence in the country’s male athletes.

“Your performance in Togo has demonstrated that handball is a progressive sport that deserves greater support from both the private sector and the Commission,” he said.

He added that while Nigeria’s female athletes have consistently delivered strong results on the international stage, the recent achievements of the male teams represent a welcome development.

Olopade also expressed optimism about the sport’s future, recalling his observations at the National Sports Festival in Ogun State, where he witnessed promising displays. He noted that with sustained investment and support, Nigeria could challenge the dominance of North African nations in the sport.

The NSC Director-General commended the leadership of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, led by Jibril Saidu, for their commitment to developing handball in the country.

He further assured the federation of the Commission’s continued backing as preparations begin for upcoming continental competitions later in the year.

In his response, Saidu expressed gratitude to the NSC for its support, noting that the federation is approaching the next continental tournament with the ambition of securing further success.
