Heavyweight Clashes Await As U-17 AFCON Enters Knockout Stage

The CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 has entered its decisive phase, with the quarter-final fixtures now confirmed following an exciting and highly competitive group stage, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Hosts Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Tanzania progressed as group winners, while Egypt, Cameroon, Mali and Algeria also secured places in the last eight after intense qualification battles.

With all quarter-finalists already guaranteed qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026, focus now shifts entirely to the race for continental supremacy.

One of the standout fixtures of the quarter-finals will see hosts Morocco take on Cameroon in a highly anticipated clash between two established forces in African youth football.

Morocco advanced to the knockout stage unbeaten after topping Group A with seven points, impressing with their technical quality, discipline and attacking fluency. Cameroon, meanwhile, recovered strongly from an opening defeat to Côte d’Ivoire to finish second in Group B with six points.

Another major encounter will pit Côte d’Ivoire against Egypt. The Ivorians progressed unbeaten from Group B with seven points and conceded only twice during the group phase, underlining their balance at both ends of the pitch.

Egypt booked their place in the quarter-finals after finishing with four points in Group A and will be hoping to build momentum in the knockout rounds.

Tanzania, one of the surprise packages of the tournament, continue their remarkable campaign against Algeria. The East Africans topped Group C after producing two impressive victories before narrowly losing their final group match.

Their fearless attacking style and organised defending have made them one of the standout teams of the competition so far.

Algeria, on the other hand, emerged from a tightly contested Group D after collecting four points and edging Ghana via the drawing of lots. The North Africans have displayed resilience and tactical discipline throughout the tournament.

Former champions Senegal will battle Mali in another high-profile West African showdown. Senegal bounced back from an early setback to top Group D with six points, while Mali progressed unbeaten from Group C with five points.

The tie is widely expected to be one of the most tactical contests of the quarter-finals, given both nations’ rich pedigree in youth football.

Beyond the results, the tournament has continued to highlight Africa’s emerging football talent, with several young players already attracting interest from European clubs and scouts.
