Host Bayelsa, Ogun Secure Two Gold Medals Each in Yenagoa

Team Bayelsa and Team Ogun emerged as standout performers on Day 3 of the Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics, each claiming two gold medals at the ongoing tournament in Yenagoa, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Competing in the U15 boys’ freestyle events, Bayelsa secured its gold medals through Iniekpoebi Godfrey and Righteous Amudukur. Godfrey defeated Ebievin Odubukeme of Dynamite Club to win the 44kg category, while Amudukur triumphed over Zikenah Woyinlayefa in the 48kg final.

Ogun State also enjoyed a strong outing in the girls’ U15 division. Rokebat Monlowolowo clinched gold in the 29kg category after overcoming Mercy Andrew, while Oreoluwa Akindipe secured victory in the 33kg event with a win against Regina Ebisuode.

Elsewhere, Dynamite Club’s Profit Bestman took gold in the 36kg girls’ category, while Happiness Peter delivered victory for Cross River in the 39kg division. Rivers State’s Oke Tobi completed the list of gold medalists in the girls’ 42kg category.

Speaking after her victory, Akindipe expressed appreciation for the support behind her success. “I want to thank my parents for allowing me to come for this competition. I also appreciate my coach for believing in me and pushing me to give my best,” she said.

The competition continues with the Greco-Roman events scheduled to commence at the indoor sports hall of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex.

The annual tournament has continued to showcase emerging wrestling talent from across Nigeria, with states and clubs competing fiercely for honours in the youth categories.
