House Sports Committee Boss Assures FCT SWAN of Continued Support, Strategic Collaboration

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sports development in Nigeria following a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu fondly called, Mai Palace.

The visit, which also included the belated presentation of an award from FCT SWAN Week 2024, served as an opportunity to strengthen ties between the association and the House Committee on Sports.

During the meeting on Thursday at his office in the National Assembly, Abuja, Hon. Amadu acknowledged FCT SWAN’s significant contributions to the growth of sports in the FCT and beyond, commending the association for its efforts in providing critical information and coverage of sporting activities.

“Even though this is not the first time we are meeting with SWAN FCT, I want to appreciate the association for what they have been doing for the entire committee and the House of Representatives,” Amadu stated.

“When it comes to SWAN, we all know what I can do, and you have already witnessed what we have put in place.”

He further assured SWAN of the committee’s continued support, noting that efforts are being made to implement projects beneficial to sports writers across Nigeria.

“We thank Mr. President for the budget while promising not to let him down. This committee will never let you down. We will continue to work with you and implore SWAN to keep providing proper information.”

Amadu also shared several upcoming initiatives aimed at enhancing sports development and engagement across different levels. He emphasized the need for proper planning and collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure the success of these projects.

“This year is definitely going to be a busy one for all of us, and I believe you (SWAN) are ever ready to help us write about these developments. God willing, we are going to achieve them,” he concluded.

In his earlier speech, FCT SWAN Chairman, Kelechi Onwudiwe, expressed appreciation for the committee’s continued collaboration and reaffirmed SWAN’s commitment to supporting sports initiatives.

“We are grateful for your unwavering support and recognition of our role in sports development,” Onwudiwe said.

“FCT SWAN remains dedicated to providing accurate and timely information to enhance the growth of the sector. Your initiatives, from the key competitions to the proposed sports summit, align with our vision, and we are ready to work with you to ensure their success.”

He further emphasized the importance of government collaboration with sports writers, stating, “The media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and policies in sports. We are ready to amplify the committee’s efforts and contribute our expertise towards achieving a well-structured and progressive sports industry in Nigeria.”

Onwudiwe, of Classic FM, Abuja, also extended an invitation to the House Committee on Sports to be part of the FCT SWAN at 35 anniversary celebration later this year.

“This milestone is significant in our journey as sports journalists in the FCT. We look forward to having the House Committee on Sports play an active role in the celebrations, as we reflect on our contributions to the industry and set the stage for greater achievements ahead.”

The FCT SWAN delegation for the visit also included Vice Chairman Victor Okoye, Secretary Samuel Ahmadu, Financial Secretary Niyi Busari, Assistant Secretary Friday Joshua of Radio Nigeria, and Welfare Officer Joan Iwuchukwu.
