Hughes Emerges Winner As Junior Golf Tourney Ends In Abuja

An 18-year-old Golfer from IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja AGIB AUBREY HUGHES has emerged the overall winner of the 2023 Junior open Golf championship.

Organized by the Lady Section of the Club, the Malian Golfer scored 216, having played 72 on the first day, 75 on the second day and 69 on the last day to outplay other 159 players.

" Last year, I was a runner up. But I prepared well for this year's edition and thank God I made it. Kudos to my parents, my caddy who keeps me company all the time.

Is not easy to lead for three days but I was happy that I became the overall winner. It really amazing". He said.

Agib however thanked the lady section for organizing the event. He is of the opinion that such event will bring out the talents in children.

Other winners of the 15th edition of the junior open include David Inalegwu of Goodluck Ebere Jonathan Golf Club, Abuja who played 225 scores to lead the Boys age 15-18 years category. Runner up is Tony Bala of Plateau Golf Academy while his counterpart from the same club, Nandom Danjuma occupied the 1st runner up position.

Grace Agbo of Otukpo Golf Academy emerged the winner of Girls 15-18 years old category, followed by Blessing Adah and Janet Alli of the same academy.

In the Boys age 11 - 14 years category, Atang Izang of Plateau won with 243 scores, while Unah Ogoh of Otukpo and Destiny Oyero of Ikeja Golf Club emerged Runner-up and 1st Runner-up respectively. In the Girls same age category, Zikachat Daniel of Plateau, Josephine Benjamin of IBB International Golf and Country Club and Janet Onah of Otukpo emerged winners.

Wilson Izang of Plateau, Aboje Alechenu of Otukpo and David Izang won the Boys 7-10 years category while Omowonuola Olarenwaju of IBB Golf Club, Toluwalashe Balogun of Ikoyi Golf Club and Emmanuella Wesley of IBB Golf Club emerged the winners in the Girls category.

Guest of honour, former Corp Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi while commending the organizer of the event, called on government to invest more in Sports.

" Let me commend the management of IBB Golf Club for organizing this junior championship. 

Government should encourage this young ones, through periodic competitions.

From what we see in the last three days, I feels this children are very promising, if they can be properly modelled, the sky will be their limit," Oyeyemi concluded.

Lady Captain, Comfort Folashade Olateju salutes the spirit of sportsmanship among the children. She said those winners in all the three categories, will have their names sent to St' Andrew for proper record.

She expressed delight that this year's competition's desire was met.

Highlights of the event were presentations of medals, Trophies and cheque to the winners. The ceremony was also used to honoured the winners of the last two editions Godwin Idoko who has turned Professional.
