The football world was abuzz with questions when Banyana Banyana’s talismanic forward, Thembi Kgatlana, was missing from South Africa’s squad for the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, now, the 29-year-old has broken her silence, explaining that her absence was due to a “pre-arranged leave of absence,” BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Kgatlana’s impact on the national team is undeniable — a proven goal-scorer, leader, and source of invaluable experience. Her unexpected withdrawal left many fans disappointed, eager to see her lead Banyana’s title defence.
It’s a role she knows well, having been instrumental in the team’s historic 2022 WAFCON triumph, even though her own tournament ended early due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Currently on the books of Tigres UANL Femenil in Mexico, Kgatlana admitted it was bittersweet to watch the continental showpiece from afar.
“My absence from the tournament has drawn speculation, but I want to clarify that I am taking a pre-arranged leave of absence from all football for personal reasons,” she said. “I love representing my country and will do so again in the future.”
She also reassured her club’s supporters: “To Tigres fans concerned that I have not returned to Mexico, I will see you all again very soon and will continue to give my all for the shirt. There is nothing to worry about and no deeper story. Thank you for all the concerns.”
