IOC Election Committee Meets To Decide Thomas Bach Successor

Seven sports gladiators would be going against one another today, as they seek the world's number one job in sports management. 

In Lausanne Switzerland, at the IOC headquarters, the 108 member IOC Election Committee would listen with rapt attention as Lord Sébastien Coe, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Kirsty Coventry, David Lappartient, Morinari Watanabe, Johan Eliasch, and Prince Faisal Al Hussein, make their final pitch as to who succeeds Thomas Bach, as the president of the International Olympic Committee IOC. 

Bach, who has been on the saddle since 2013, will call time on his presidency after the election, which comes up in March this year. It is believed in some quarters that Bach favors Coventry, the only woman on the ballot. There are also indications that Samaranch, who is currently an IOC vice president and whose father held the position many years ago, may enjoy some sympathy. There are also speculations that Coe, currently the head of European athletics, may enjoy block support. 

While the other four candidates are largely seen as outsiders, in the world of sports, generally, and Olympics, particularly, anything can happen. Each of the candidates would have 15 minutes to address the members of the election committee and convince them of their suitability for the position. 

Funnily enough, the campaign will not be covered by any kind of media, as journalists are barred from the meeting. There will be no photographs and no snippets in one of the most secret events in world sports. 

Whatever the permutations, however, what remains clear is that the IOC would have a new president in March if everything goes according to plan.
