Imade Finally Opts For Spain Over Nigeria, Makes Competitive Debut

Nigeria’s hopes of securing forward Edna Imade for the Super Falcons have officially come to an end after the striker made her competitive debut for Spain, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Imade featured for La Roja in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final on Friday, ending any possibility of representing Nigeria in the future.

Born in Morocco to a Nigerian mother, the 25-year-old was eligible to play for either Nigeria or Morocco.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had engaged in efforts to convince her to commit to the Super Falcons, and the player once indicated interest in wearing the green and white colours.

However, a call-up from the reigning world champions changed the course of her career, and she decided to pursue her international future with Spain.

Head coach Sonia Bermúdez included Imade in the squad for the two-legged final against Germany, and she made her debut when she replaced Esther González in the 85th minute.

Since the UEFA Women’s Nations League is a recognized competitive tournament, her appearance automatically ties her permanently to Spain under FIFA rules closing the door on any switch to Nigeria or Morocco.

Imade now becomes the latest talent of Nigerian descent to represent another nation on the international stage.
