Invitational Tourney: Oyo SWAN Dominates IRC In Four Sports Duel

The football team of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo State chapter Ibadan on Friday walked over their counterparts from the Ibadan Recreation Club as the host team refused to show up.

Contrary to expectations, the IRC football team which had earlier boasted that they would thrash Oyo SWAN became timid and chickened out on the day of the game.

The unexpected non-appearance of the host soccer team was attributed to the intimidating profile of Oyo SWAN team which paraded some players of the four times Champions of SWAN Cup, the BCOS.

However, in other games the two teams matched each other skill to skill and strength for strength.

Team IRC and Team SWAN settled for draw in tennis as Team SWAN won the singles while Team IRC won in the doubles event.

In Table Tennis and Darts, Team IRC who paraded highly experienced and professional players, effortlessly defeated Team SWAN rookies.

But the Men of the Pen Profession were hard nuts for IRC to crack in the game of Ludo. Both the male and female players of Oyo SWAN made mincemeat out of their opponents from IRC

Speaking at a dinner held after the games, the Chairman of the visiting Oyo SWAN, Mr Niyi Alebiosu declared that there was no victor, no vanquished at the end of the sporting contest.

"We were not defeated but we didn't win. As good guests, we feel it's not morally good to beat our hosts in their domain. We're not here to disgrace our hosts but to catch fun", Alebiosu said.

Oyo SWAN Chairman appreciated the hospitality of the leadership of the Ibadan Recreation Club led by Dr Adesoji Tayo.

Responding to the remarks of the Chairman of the visiting team, the President of Ibadan Recreation Club Dr Adesoji Tayo thanked the Association of sports writers for honouring the invitation from his Club.

He advised the visitors to make the best use of the dinner to have fun and network with the creme de la creme in his Club.

"Sports writers are wonderful people and very influential. They may not be good in playing games like us but are capable of using their pens to do and undo. Therefore, we see it as a delight to host these pen pushers. I urge our guests to use this special gathering to interact and network with the great personalities who grace this event", Dr Tayo stated.

Highlights of the occasion was the investiture of the IRC President as the Patron of Oyo SWAN.

The investiture of Dr Tayo as Oyo SWAN Patron was jointly performed by the Chairman of the State Sports Council Mr Gboyega Makinde, an ex International Mr Ike Shorunmu and a former sports editor of Tribune Newspapers Mr Ade Somefun.

The post game dinner was also attended by a former Oyo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Yomi Oke and the Chairman of Shooting Stars Sports Club, Honourable Babatunde Olaniyan.
