Iran Coach Reflects On Tactical Lessons After Loss To Nigeria

Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered an impressive performance on Friday, defeating World Cup-bound Iran 2–1 in an international friendly played in Antalya, Turkey.

Goals from Moses Simon and Adams Akor in each half secured the victory for Nigeria, who controlled large stretches of the match. Iran’s only response came through Mehdi Taremi, who reduced the deficit but could not prevent defeat.

Following the match, Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei acknowledged the value of the encounter, describing it as a crucial test for his side ahead of upcoming competitions.

“This was a very useful preparation game,” Ghalenoei said in remarks to Tasnim News Agency. “We were able to implement an alternative defensive approach against a strong and physical team like Nigeria.”

He praised the quality of the Nigerian squad, highlighting their international pedigree. “Nigeria is a very good team, and all eleven players compete in major European leagues, including Spain, Italy, England, France, Greece, and Turkey,” he noted.

Ghalenoei also emphasized the importance of experimentation during the fixture, taking advantage of expanded substitution allowances to assess a broader pool of players.

“The national team needs matches like this. We tried to give more players opportunities, and with the option of making up to eight substitutions, we were able to evaluate different individuals,” he added.

Nigeria will continue their preparations with another friendly on Tuesday against World Cup participants Jordan.
