Iran Football Federation Negotiates Venue Shift Amid Security Concerns

Iran is in discussions with FIFA over the possibility of relocating its 2026 World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, citing security concerns for its players.

The president of the Iran Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, confirmed on Monday that talks are ongoing amid rising geopolitical tensions.

The concerns follow recent military actions involving the United States and Israel targeting Tehran, which Iranian authorities say have heightened risks for the national team. Iran’s sports minister had earlier indicated that participation in matches on U.S. soil may not be feasible under the current circumstances.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran would be permitted to take part in the tournament but acknowledged potential security challenges, suggesting it might not be appropriate for the team to play in the United States “for their own life and safety.”

Responding to those remarks, Taj said Iran would not travel to the U.S. if adequate security assurances could not be guaranteed.

“When President Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America,” Taj said in a statement shared via the Iranian embassy in Mexico.

He added that Iran is seeking to have its matches staged in Mexico instead.

Iran has already qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11. Under the current schedule, the team is set to play two group-stage matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
