Italiano Takes Over at Besiktas as Ndidi Faces New Chapter in Turkey
By Our Reporter
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is set to begin the 2026/27 season under a new manager after Besiktas confirmed the appointment of Italian tactician Vincenzo Italiano as the club’s head coach, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Turkish giants announced the appointment on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the leadership of the club following a disappointing campaign. Italiano has signed a contract that will keep him at Besiktas until the end of the 2027/28 season.
The 48-year-old arrives in Istanbul with an impressive managerial résumé, having previously coached Bologna, Fiorentina and Spezia in Italy’s Serie A. He is expected to spearhead a major rebuilding project at Besiktas after the club endured a difficult season.
Besiktas finished fourth in the Turkish Super Lig, ending the campaign 17 points behind champions Galatasaray. The result fell well below expectations and ultimately led to the departure of former coach Sergen Yalcin.
For Ndidi, Italiano’s arrival marks the beginning of a crucial period as the Nigerian international seeks to establish himself under the new technical setup.
The 29-year-old joined Besiktas from Leicester City in August 2025 for a reported €8 million fee and signed a three-year contract with an option for an additional year. He was named vice-captain two months later and went on to make 25 appearances in all competitions, contributing two goals and one assist.
Before his move to Turkey, Ndidi spent eight successful years at Leicester City, where he earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most dependable defensive midfielders.
However, uncertainty remains over his role in Italiano’s plans. Turkish football analyst Mustafa Demirtas has suggested that the Nigerian could face increased competition for his place, claiming the Italian coach may prefer a different midfield profile to suit his tactical philosophy.
According to Demirtas, Besiktas could look to strengthen the defensive midfield position during the summer transfer window, potentially creating fresh competition for Ndidi as the club reshapes its squad ahead of the new season.
Despite the speculation, Italiano’s arrival offers a fresh opportunity for Ndidi to impress and secure a key role in Besiktas’ bid to return to title contention.
