Ivorian Football Federation President Set For Re-Election As Main Challenger Withdraws

Yacine Idriss Diallo is set to face no opposition in the upcoming election for the presidency of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) after his main challenger, Souleymane Cissé, withdrew from the race, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Five days after the deadline for applications closed, Cissé, president of Racing Club d'Abidjan, broke his silence over his decision to pull out of the contest.

In a lengthy statement published on Facebook, Cissé categorically denied that his withdrawal was the result of any behind-the-scenes agreement or negotiations.

He described the decision as a “personal, thoughtful and fully assumed” choice, insisting that his withdrawal was not influenced by any form of bargaining.

“My withdrawal was not subject to any bargaining,” Cissé stated, adding that he received “absolutely nothing” in exchange for stepping aside.

The Racing Club d'Abidjan president also denied negotiating for the continued existence of his club, a vice-presidential position within the FIF or any other personal benefit.

His withdrawal leaves incumbent president Yacine Idriss Diallo as the only declared candidate for the election scheduled to take place on September 12 in Yamoussoukro.

Another potential candidate, Malick Tohé, has also opted to support Diallo rather than contest the election. Diallo, who was first elected FIF president in April 2022, is seeking another mandate and has defended his record in office.

The incumbent has pledged to continue with the reforms initiated during his first term, promising to “continue what we have started” while consolidating the progress made under his leadership.

With no other declared challenger remaining, Diallo is now firmly positioned to retain the presidency of the Ivorian Football Federation at the September election.
