Iwobi: Super Eagles Have What It Takes To Lift AFCON Trophy
By Admin
Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi says the Super Eagles have the talent and determination to clinch the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, insisting the team is ready to improve on their runner-up finish at the last tournament, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Iwobi, who plays for Fulham and is currently the most experienced member of the squad with 91 international caps, has featured in three AFCON tournaments and is expected to play a key role in Eric Chelle’s team when the competition begins in Morocco.
Nigeria were finalists at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast, but their journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup was cut short following a penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo. With World Cup qualification no longer in sight, the team is now fully focused on the continental championship.
Despite the disappointment, Iwobi believes the squad has enough depth and quality to compete against top contenders including defending champions Ivory Coast and host nation Morocco.
“We were really close at the last AFCON, but the only way to improve on that is to win it,” Iwobi said in an interview with AySuga Channel. “We have the players to do it, we believe we can — we just have to prove it.”
Iwobi, who expressed confidence in the team’s mentality, added that he is willing to “manifest” a Nigerian triumph.
“I would like to speak it into existence. I like to manifest. I want to say Nigeria will win the AFCON,” he declared.
Nigeria, three-time African champions, will be seeking a fourth continental title in Morocco.
