Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed an intriguing exchange with Egypt’s goalkeeper moments before converting his penalty during Nigeria’s shootout victory in the third-place match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria defeated Egypt 4–2 on penalties on Saturday to secure the bronze medal, with Iwobi calmly dispatching the Super Eagles’ third spot kick.
Speaking after the match, Iwobi recounted the brief conversation that took place as he prepared to step up, explaining that the Egyptian goalkeeper attempted to unsettle him with a light-hearted challenge.
“He said to me, ‘Iwobi, I know where you’re going to place the ball, and if I save your penalty, you have to give me your shirt,’” Iwobi said. “I told him, ‘No problem.’”
The Fulham midfielder’s confident finish proved decisive, helping Nigeria maintain their advantage in the shootout and ultimately claim third place at the tournament.
Nigeria’s victory over Egypt secured their ninth AFCON bronze medal, bringing their 2025 campaign to a positive conclusion after falling to hosts Morocco on penalties in the semifinal.
