Joshua-Fury Showdown Could Pave Way To Third World Heavyweight Title
By Our Reporter
Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could have more than bragging rights at stake when they finally meet, with the winner potentially earning an opportunity to challenge for the WBC heavyweight title, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The long-awaited all-British showdown is expected to take place in New York in November, although an official announcement is yet to be made. Fury has, however, strongly hinted that confirmation of the bout is imminent.
Joshua and Fury have been on a collision course for more than a decade but have never faced each other while either man held a world heavyweight title. Their eventual meeting is expected to be contested without a championship belt on the line.
However, the winner could move into position for a shot at WBC champion Agit Kabayel, who became the organisation's titleholder after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt.
Kabayel is expected to make the first defence of his title later this year before potentially facing either Joshua or Fury in 2027.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has backed the idea of making the Joshua-Fury bout a final eliminator for the heavyweight championship.
“That would be sensational,” Sulaiman told Betway when asked whether the fight could serve as a final eliminator. “The WBC would absolutely approve that as a final eliminator.”
Sulaiman also highlighted Fury's standing with the organisation and praised both fighters.
“Tyson Fury is the No.1 contender of the division, and the WBC absolutely would be proud to be part of that promotion,” he said.
“Both fighters are tremendous. Tyson Fury is one of the greatest ambassadors ever of the WBC. We are so proud. He is very friendly, very kind, inside and outside of the ring.
“Anthony Joshua, he was the first ranked by the WBC when he started boxing. He was number two contender of the WBC when he had the opportunity from the IBF to fight Charles Martin.
“He had to go the other way and he was the WBC International Champion for several years, but that’s the way boxing is. Maybe this will be the time to bring Anthony Joshua to the WBC.”
Fury further fuelled speculation about the bout on social media, revealing that a major announcement is close.
Speaking with mirror.co.uk from his gym, the former unified heavyweight champion said his preparations were progressing well before teasing fans about the anticipated showdown.
“Everything is going well. I got some big news going to be dropped very, very soon,” Fury said. “All is good in the hood, big fight on the horizon, it’s the one you’ve all been waiting for.
“About to be announced imminently, so stay tuned.”
The potential Joshua-Fury clash, reportedly targeted for November 20 in New York, would mark the culmination of one of heavyweight boxing's longest-running rivalries.
If approved as a WBC final eliminator, the stakes would be even higher, with the winner potentially moving one step closer to a third reign as heavyweight world champion.
