By Niyi Busari
Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, brought Lagos to a jubilant halt on Tuesday as they paraded their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy through major streets in a triumphant victory tour that stirred emotions and national pride, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Fresh off their historic win over Morocco in Rabat, the Falcons were met with rapturous cheers as they showcased the coveted trophy atop an open-top bus. Adorned in celebratory attire, the players waved and smiled at adoring crowds who lined the streets of Lagos, waving flags, chanting, and singing in unison.
The parade, which commenced from the heart of Lagos, passed through key areas including Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Surulere. It drew thousands of fans from diverse backgrounds — from market vendors pausing business to schoolchildren running after the motorcade — all eager to salute the continental champions.
For many, the moment transcended sport. It was a unifying celebration of resilience, national pride, and the ever-growing influence of women’s football in Nigeria.
Traffic was temporarily disrupted in parts of the city as the sea of supporters created a festival-like atmosphere, turning Lagos into a moving carnival of green and white.
Lagos State officials, who joined in the festivities, hailed the Super Falcons as role models and pledged continued investment in women’s sports and grassroots development across the state.
“The Super Falcons have once again made Nigeria proud. Their dedication, courage, and achievements are an inspiration to young girls everywhere,” a state sports official remarked.
As the golden trophy shimmered in the afternoon sun, it stood not only as a symbol of athletic excellence but also as a testament to the strength, unity, and spirit of Nigerian women.
