England overcame a spirited early challenge from DR Congo to secure a 2-1 victory on Wednesday, dashing the African nation’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Cipenga stunned the Three Lions with a seventh-minute opener, giving DR Congo a shock lead that they defended resolutely through the remainder of the first half.

The underdogs appeared on course for a famous result as they frustrated England’s attacking stars after the break.

However, captain Harry Kane delivered when it mattered most.

The England forward netted twice in the final 15 minutes striking in the 75th and 86th minutes to complete a dramatic comeback and secure all three points for his side.

Kane’s brace not only turned the match on its head but also confirmed England’s progression to the round of 16.

DR Congo, who needed a positive result to keep their knockout-stage dreams alive, were left empty-handed despite an impressive showing that belied their underdog status.
