Kwara United to Battle Abakaliki FC in Historic 2025 President Federation Cup Final
By Niyi Busari
In a dramatic twist at the 2025 President Federation Cup, underdogs Kwara United and Abakaliki FC have booked their spots in the final, following the unexpected exits of tournament favorites, Enugu Rangers and Ikorodu City.
The results have paved the way for a historic final, as both Kwara United and Abakaliki FC will be making their first-ever appearances in the national cup final—marking a new chapter in Nigerian football history.
Kwara United secured their place in the final after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Enugu Rangers, with Wasiu Alalade scoring the decisive goal in the 50th minute. The win carries added historical significance for the state, as it marks Kwara’s first return to the final since Alyufsalam Rocks represented the state in 1976, ultimately falling 2-0 to Enugu Rangers in the then Challenge Cup final.
Meanwhile, Abakaliki FC, a Nigeria National League (NNL) side, pulled off a remarkable upset by defeating Ikorodu City 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time. The loss is a bitter blow for Ikorodu City, who had hoped to secure a CAF Confederation Cup ticket through a Federation Cup triumph, having already missed out on a top-three league finish.
Their league hopes were dashed two weeks earlier when they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Remo Stars, while Abia Warriors overtook them with a 2-1 win against El Kanemi Warriors.
With the stage now set, Kwara United and Abakaliki FC will battle for national glory and a potential continental slot, in what promises to be an electrifying final and a celebration of the underdogs.
