List Of Four African Nations Poised For World Cup Knockout Qualification

By Our Reporter

Four African teams remain firmly in contention for places in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following impressive performances in the group phase.

Egypt became the fourth African nation to record a victory at the tournament after coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 in their second Group G match at BC Place in Vancouver.

The Pharaohs recovered from an early setback with goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet securing all three points. The victory followed Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Belgium in their opening fixture, moving them to the top of Group G with four points from two matches.

The North Africans now have a strong opportunity to advance to the round of 16. A positive result against Iran in their final group match could secure their qualification.

Elsewhere, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco have also strengthened Africa’s presence at the tournament with crucial victories.

Ivory Coast became the first African side to register a win at the World Cup, edging Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match. The Elephants currently occupy second place in their group with three points and remain on course for qualification. Victory over Curaçao in their final group fixture would significantly boost their chances of progressing.

Ghana also secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. The Black Stars will look to build on that result as they seek a place in the last 16.

Reigning African champions Morocco have continued their impressive run on the global stage. The Atlas Lions defeated Scotland 1-0 and currently sit second in their group on four points, level with leaders Brazil. A win against Haiti in their final group match would be enough to guarantee their place in the knockout rounds.

With several teams well positioned heading into the decisive round of group fixtures, Africa could have strong representation in the World Cup knockout stages, with Egypt, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Ghana all harbouring hopes of extending their campaigns.
