Logistics Delay of Cameroonian Team Reduces Super Falcons Friendly to One-Leg Fixture in Abeokuta

The much-anticipated international women’s friendly between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses has been scaled down to a single match, now set to take place on Monday, June 2, at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
According to Nigeria Football, it was originally slated as a two-leg series with games in Ikenne and Abeokuta, but the fixture was altered following logistical delays on the part of the Cameroonian team. The delegation, initially scheduled to arrive on Thursday, is now expected to land in Lagos on Saturday morning, having finalized travel arrangements late Thursday evening.
The visiting squad includes 24 players, a blend of foreign-based stars and home-grown talents from the Guinness Super League, and will proceed to their base in Ijebu-Ode upon arrival.
Despite the change in schedule, the match remains a crucial component of the Super Falcons’ preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. Nigeria, nine-time continental champions, will be competing in their 13th consecutive WAFCON appearance, aiming to reclaim the title and extend their dominance.
For Cameroon, the fixture presents an opportunity to regroup and begin early preparations for the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers, following a historic low—failing to qualify for the 2024 edition. Internal administrative challenges within the Cameroonian Football Federation had jeopardized their participation, but those issues have now been resolved.
The match will reignite one of African women’s football’s most storied rivalries. Nigeria leads the all-time head-to-head with 14 wins in 20 matches, while Cameroon has secured three victories, with three draws between the sides.
Recent history heavily favors the Super Falcons, who have triumphed in eight of the last eleven encounters, including decisive wins in WAFCON finals and Olympic qualifiers.
