Lookman, Onyedika Score As Club Brugge Hold Atlético Madrid in Champions League Classic
By Niyi Busari
Super Eagles duo Raphael Onyedika and Ademola Lookman were both on target as Club Brugge KV battled to an entertaining 3–3 draw with Atlético Madrid in their UEFA Champions League encounter in Belgium.
Atlético made a bright start and took the lead in the eighth minute when Julián Álvarez calmly converted a penalty, sending his effort low into the bottom corner after a handball by Joaquin Seys inside the area.
The visitors doubled their advantage just before the interval. Lookman reacted quickest inside the box to tap home from close range after a deft flick-on from Antoine Griezmann, giving Atlético a 2–0 cushion at half-time.
Club Brugge responded strongly after the break. Onyedika ignited the comeback in the 52nd minute, finishing clinically to reduce the deficit. The Nigerian midfielder continued to influence proceedings, providing an assist for Christos Tzolis’ late equaliser after what appeared to be a decisive own goal by Joel Ordoñez had restored Atlético’s advantage.
The result capped a pulsating six-goal contest, with both Nigerian internationals playing pivotal roles for their respective sides on a dramatic European night.
