Lookman Claims Man of the Match as Nigeria Edge Tunisia 3–2
By Niyi Busari
Ademola Lookman was named Man of the Match after delivering an influential performance in Nigeria’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Tunisia in a decisive Group C encounter at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
The Atalanta forward capped a standout display with a goal and an assist, playing a key role as the Super Eagles secured qualification for the Round of 16. Nigeria took control of the match at the Fez Stadium in Morocco through a first-half header from Victor Osimhen and a second goal early in the second half by captain Wilfred Ndidi.
Osimhen, who had earlier seen a 17th-minute effort ruled out for offside, eventually broke the deadlock before receiving a yellow card for an inappropriate gesture during celebrations. Ndidi’s goal shortly after the interval gave Nigeria a firm grip on proceedings.
Lookman later extended Nigeria’s advantage, benefiting from Osimhen’s assist and showing composure in front of goal to put the Super Eagles further ahead. Tunisia mounted a late comeback, scoring twice to set up a tense finish, but Nigeria held on to secure maximum points.
The win confirmed Nigeria’s progression to the knockout stage, joining Egypt among the teams already assured of a place in the second round. By reaching the Round of 16, the Super Eagles also earned a guaranteed prize of $800,000 from the tournament.
For Osimhen, the goal marked his second at the Africa Cup of Nations in 10 appearances. The striker is now five goals shy of equalling the long-standing national scoring record held by the late Rashidi Yekini.
