Lookman Eyes Champions League Semi-Final Spot as Atletico Host Barcelona
By Admin
Ademola Lookman is poised to become the only Nigerian player to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League this season as Atlético Madrid face FC Barcelona in the decisive second leg of their quarter-final clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Atletico head into the encounter with a two-goal advantage, having secured an emphatic first-leg victory at Camp Nou. Goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth sealed the win after Barcelona were reduced to 10 men late in the first half.
Focus among Nigerian supporters will centre on Lookman, who has become an influential figure since joining Atletico. The Super Eagles forward has registered five goals and three assists in 16 appearances for the Madrid side.
With their La Liga title hopes fading and Barcelona leading the race domestically, Atletico are increasingly reliant on European competition for silverware this season, alongside the Copa del Rey, where they have already eliminated the Catalan side to reach the final.
Despite a recent setback against Sevilla FC, a match in which manager Diego Simeone rotated his squad, Atletico remain formidable at home. They had previously recorded six consecutive victories at the Metropolitano and have failed to score just once on home soil this season.
Lookman is expected to play a key attacking role, likely alongside Antoine Griezmann. His pace and direct style are viewed as crucial assets against Barcelona’s high defensive line, particularly in transition phases.
Barcelona, managed by Hansi Flick, face a significant challenge in overturning the deficit. Their first-leg struggles were compounded by the dismissal of Pau Cubarsí. However, they travel to Madrid buoyed by a 4–1 victory over RCD Espanyol, where teenage star Lamine Yamal marked his 100th La Liga appearance with a goal and two assists.
The Catalan side currently sit comfortably atop La Liga, holding a nine-point lead over Real Madrid. Their immediate focus, however, is on keeping their European campaign alive.
While Barcelona have secured away wins against Atletico in recent seasons, memories of a heavy Copa del Rey defeat earlier this year may weigh on their confidence. A clinical performance will be required if they are to mount a comeback.
For Lookman, the fixture represents another opportunity to underline his growing influence in Spanish football, with a place in the Champions League semi-finals within reach.
