Lookman Fails To Score As Penalties, VAR Take Centre Stage in Arsenal–Atlético Draw

Arsenal and Atlético Madrid played out a 1–1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return fixture, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman featured in the encounter but was unable to find the net in a closely contested match shaped largely by penalty decisions and VAR interventions.

Arsenal took the lead on the stroke of half-time after Viktor Gyökeres won and converted a penalty, giving the Premier League side a crucial advantage heading into the break.

Atlético Madrid responded in the 56th minute, drawing level through Julián Álvarez, who emphatically converted from the spot after Ben White was penalised for handball.

The match saw further late drama when Arsenal were awarded a second penalty in the 79th minute following a challenge on Eberechi Eze. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned due to insufficient contact.

With the tie now level, both teams will look ahead to the decisive second leg, where a place in next month’s final will be at stake. The winner will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich.
