Lookman Inspires Atalanta, Becomes Nigeria's Second-Best Scorer In Italy
Ibrahim Lateef
Super Eagles inform striker Ademola Lookman responded to the midweek controversy, by firing a brace in Atlanta's 5-0 pummeling of Empoli on Sunday, reports BSNSports.com.ng.
La Dea was still smarting from not only the Champions League play-off defeat to Club Brugge but also the fallout from Lookman’s missed penalty and the vicious Gian Piero Gasperini criticism of his insistence on taking it.
Atalanta took the lead with a bit of luck, as Zappacosta’s cross took a big deflection off Emmanuel Gyasi’s chest to loop over Silvestri into the far top corner.
The team was on the double on the next corner, as it was taken short, and Lookman’s cross flicked on by Djimsiti for Retegui to side-foot home. In the 43rd minute, Lookman, on a one-on-one with Empoli's goalkeeper, netted a goal with a precise right-footed shot from close range.
Thanks to Retegui's assist, Lookman skillfully dodged Silvestri and slotted the ball home. Showing his class and efficiency, the Nigerian talent struck again in the 55th minute, leaving Empoli's defenders speechless.
With 36 goals and still counting, Lookman overtakes Simy Nwankwo to become the second all-time highest-scoring Nigerian in Serie A, behind Victor Osimhen with 65 goals.
