World football governing body FIFA has introduced a new regulation mandating that all teams participating in women’s tournaments organised by the body must appoint either a female head coach or a female assistant coach, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The directive is expected to have significant implications for several national teams, including Nigeria’s senior and youth women’s sides.

The Nigerian senior women’s team, the Super Falcons, is currently handled by Justine Madugu, while the U-20 side, the Falconets, is under the leadership of Moses Adukwu both male coaches.

With the new FIFA policy coming into effect, teams that fail to comply risk sanctions or possible exclusion from competitions, placing pressure on the Nigeria Football Federation to make swift adjustments.

The rule is part of FIFA’s broader initiative to promote gender inclusion and increase female representation in coaching roles within women’s football globally.

As it stands, unless changes are made to the technical crews of both teams, Madugu and Adukwu could lose their positions or be required to work alongside qualified female assistants to meet the new criteria.
