Madugu Reveals Why Super Falcons Failed To Secure International Friendlies

Sampson Adedeji

Head coach of the Nigerian women’s national team, Justin Madugu, has disclosed that several top European countries rejected requests to play friendly matches against the Super Falcons during the recent FIFA international window, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking on the team’s inactivity during the break, Madugu explained that efforts were made to secure quality international friendlies, but many European sides preferred to face teams within their continent ahead of the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

“We’ve made approaches to more than five countries, but some are not willing to play African teams. We’re not happy about it because it’s not helping our preparations,” Madugu said.

The coach further noted that most European nations are concentrating on matches against fellow European opponents as part of their build-up for the qualifiers.

“Some European teams are more focused on playing against European teams because of their World Cup qualifiers,” he told Brila FM radio

The lack of friendly matches is seen as a setback for the nine-time African champions as they continue preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the next edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
