Maduka Okoye Sets New Benchmark for Nigerian Goalkeepers in Europe

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye became the first Nigerian goalkeeper in 11 years to register 10 clean sheets in a single season across Europe’s top five leagues after helping Udinese Calcio secure a 2-0 victory over Cagliari Calcio in Saturday’s Serie A encounter, BSNSpors.com.ng reports.

The milestone ends a long-standing record set by former Nigerian international Vincent Enyeama, who kept 17 clean sheets for Lille OSC during the 2014/15 Ligue 1 season.

Okoye produced another assured display at the Unipol Domus, making three important saves to preserve his side’s clean sheet and provide the foundation for Udinese’s victory.

The 26-year-old was particularly impressive in the first half, producing a superb fingertip save to deny Cagliari and keep the match level before Udinese eventually took control.

Adam Buksa opened the scoring in the 56th minute, while Idrissa Gueye added a second deep into stoppage time to seal all three points for the visitors.

The result lifted Udinese to ninth place in the Serie A standings and strengthened the club’s hopes of securing a top-half finish this season.

For Okoye, the clean sheet also equalled his personal best of 10 shutouts achieved during the 2020/21 campaign with Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie.

Matching that tally in Serie A — widely regarded as one of Europe’s most tactically demanding leagues — highlights the significant progress the Nigerian goalkeeper has made in recent years.

After enduring a difficult spell at Watford FC, where regular playing opportunities were limited, Okoye has rebuilt both his confidence and reputation since moving to Udinese in 2022.

His commanding presence, shot-stopping ability, and improved composure have established him as one of the standout goalkeepers in the Italian top flight this season.

Okoye’s performances have reportedly attracted interest from several European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, with Inter Milan, AC Milan and AFC Bournemouth all said to be monitoring the Nigerian international.

The goalkeeper’s consistent form is also expected to strengthen his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of upcoming international competitions and World Cup qualifying fixtures.
