Makinde: Oyo Ready to Host Super Eagles, Awaiting NFF Green Light

 Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to provide a comprehensive list of upgrade requirements for the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, with a view to hosting future Super Eagles matches, BSNSports.comng reports.

The governor made the appeal during the opening ceremony of the NFF’s 2025 Annual General Assembly, which took place in Ibadan over the weekend. He emphasized the state government's commitment to upgrading the stadium to meet international standards, provided the NFF outlines the necessary improvements.

“I want the NFF to assess the facilities at the Lekan Salami Stadium and advise the Oyo State Government on what needs to be done to make it eligible to host Super Eagles matches. Once we receive the list of requirements, you can be assured it will be implemented. Our people deserve to watch the best footballers in Africa play here,” Makinde stated.

The Lekan Salami Stadium on Saturday hosted the Falconets’ 4–0 victory over Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match, showcasing the venue’s potential for high-profile international games. The stadium last hosted the Super Eagles in 1994, during preparations for the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Governor Makinde also used the occasion to propose governance reforms within Nigerian football, recommending a single 5–6 year term for the NFF presidency to encourage stability and long-term planning.
