Mauritania Reassigned To North Africa, Exits West Africa Zone A

Mauritania has officially been reassigned to the North Africa football zone, ending its participation in the West Africa A (WAFU A) region, BSNSports.com.ng reports

The development represents a significant structural shift within African football, with direct implications for regional competitions, qualification pathways, and administrative groupings under the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

By moving to the North Africa zone, Mauritania will no longer compete in WAFU A tournaments and qualifiers.

 Instead, the country will now be aligned with North African nations, altering its competitive landscape at youth, club, and senior national team levels.

The reassignment is expected to reshape regional tournaments, affect competitive balance within both zones, and influence travel, scheduling, and rivalries.

 For West Africa A, Mauritania’s exit reduces the number of participating nations, while North Africa gains an additional member with growing football ambition.
