England produced a devastating first-half display to defeat France 6-4 in an unforgettable FIFA World Cup third-place play-off, responding in emphatic fashion to their semi-final disappointment against Argentina, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Three Lions raced into a four-goal lead before half-time with a clinical attacking performance that left France stunned. While Les Bleus mounted a spirited comeback after the break, England held their nerve to secure victory in a pulsating encounter.

Declan Rice, captaining England in place of Harry Kane, opened the scoring after just three minutes. The midfielder capitalized on a costly mistake by Désiré Doué, who surrendered possession in his own half, before unleashing a superb long-range strike beyond Mike Maignan.

Rice then turned provider in the 18th minute, delivering a pinpoint corner that Ezri Konsa powered home with a towering header after beating Adrien Rabiot in the air.

Bukayo Saka was the standout performer of the first half, tormenting Theo Hernández and the French defence throughout. The Arsenal winger scored twice in the space of four minutes to put England firmly in control.

His first goal came after he initiated a lightning-fast counterattack by releasing Marcus Rashford. Although Rashford's effort was saved by Maignan and Saka's initial rebound was blocked by Maxence Lacroix, the winger calmly finished after Rashford returned the ball to him.

Saka grabbed his second in first-half stoppage time, latching onto an incisive through ball from Eberechi Eze before finishing confidently to give England a commanding 4-0 lead at the interval.

France emerged with renewed determination after the break and began their comeback in the 54th minute. Kylian Mbappé threaded a brilliant pass through midfield for Bradley Barcola, who finished clinically past Dean Henderson.

Four minutes later, Mbappé added his name to the scoresheet, becoming the tournament's leading scorer with nine goals. The strike also marked his best-ever World Cup goals return since making his tournament debut in 2018 and saw him draw level with Lionel Messi's all-time World Cup scoring record of 21 goals.

Mbappé reached another historic milestone in the 66th minute, scoring his second of the match to move onto 22 World Cup goals and surpass Messi as the competition's all-time leading scorer.

England restored their two-goal cushion five minutes from full-time when Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot to make it 5-3.

France refused to surrender, with Ousmane Dembélé reducing the deficit once again to set up a tense finale. However, Jude Bellingham ended any hopes of a dramatic comeback by scoring England's sixth goal in the sixth minute of added time, sealing an entertaining 6-4 victory.

The result ensured England finished their World Cup campaign on a high, delivering an attacking masterclass that underlined the quality within Gareth Southgate's squad despite the heartbreak of missing out on a place in the final.
