Messi Magic in Luanda: Argentina Celebrate Angola’s Jubilee with 2–0 Win

Lionel Messi once again showcased his enduring brilliance as Argentina defeated Angola 2–0 in an international friendly in Luanda on Friday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The match, played at the Estádio 11 de Novembro, formed part of Angola’s celebrations marking 50 years of independence from Portugal.

Ranked second in the world behind Spain, Argentina entered the contest as overwhelming favourites against an Angolan side positioned 87 places lower in the FIFA rankings. The gulf in class was evident, with Messi orchestrating much of Argentina’s attacking play.

The world champions broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Messi created a superb opening for Lautaro Martínez, who finished calmly. The pair combined again late in the second half, this time with Martínez turning provider in the 82nd minute as Messi fired a precise effort into the far corner to seal the win. Both were substituted shortly afterward as Argentina rotated their squad.

The fixture formed part of Argentina’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and provided valuable playing time ahead of more competitive engagements. Despite being reigning world champions, Argentina had to progress through the CONMEBOL qualifying campaign, where they topped the standings with 38 points after 12 wins, two draws and four losses.

For Angola, who famously qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany after edging Nigeria on head-to-head results, the match offered a stern test amid a challenging qualification cycle. The Black Antelopes managed only two wins in 10 matches in the 2026 qualifiers, finishing 11 points behind group winners Cape Verde.

Ultimately, the friendly not only celebrated a national milestone for Angola but also reinforced Argentina’s dominance and highlighted Messi’s continued influence on the international stage.
