Ibrahim Lateef

Ghana Black Stars legend, Michael Essien has named the Super Eagles of Nigeria as his favourite rivals, highlighting that he never experienced defeat against them throughout his career.

BSNSports.com.ng sourced from GhanaSoccer in his recent interview with Joy Sports. Essien, a former teammate of John Mikel Obi at Chelsea expressed pride in his unbeaten record against Nigeria, highlighting the significance of their encounter during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations as his most memorable match. “My favourite game will be against Nigeria in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. I never lost against Nigeria while on the pitch," he said. "I played in the friendly in London. I did not play in the match at the 2006 AFCON. If I'm on the pitch, we don't lose. We were losing (referring to the 2008 AFCON match) and I scored," Essien added. Now serving as an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland, Essien remains one of the few players to have represented Ghana at every level and officially retired from professional football in 2020.
