Military Barracks Rivalry Ignites As CDS Youth Championship Kicks Off In Abuja

The 2026 CDS Abuja Military Barracks Youth Sports Championship burst into life on Monday with thrilling encounters in football, basketball and volleyball as military barracks across Abuja battled for early supremacy.

The championship, organised by Defence Headquarters Nigeria, is holding at the Mogadishu Cantonment Sports Complex and the Aguiyi Ironsi Sports Complex, with teams from Mogadishu Cantonment, Nigerian Navy Barracks, NAF Valley, NAF Base Bill Clinton, Mambilla, General AO Azazi, Shittu Alao and Lungi barracks competing for honours.

The biggest drama of the opening day came in the women's football event, where NAF Base Bill Clinton booked a place in the final after crushing Nigerian Navy Barracks 4-0 in the first semi-final. In the second semi-final, Mogadishu Cantonment edged NAF Valley 4-3 on penalties after both sides settled for a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Volleyball action also delivered exciting moments as Mogadishu defeated NAF Base Bill Clinton 2-0 in both the men's and women's categories, while Nigerian Navy Barracks recorded identical victories over NAF Valley. Lungi and Mambilla also secured opening-day wins in the men's competition, while General AO Azazi defeated Mambilla in the women's event.

In basketball, Mambilla produced the most dominant display of the day, hammering Shittu Alao 61-17 in the men's category, while Lungi defeated General AO Azazi 51-16. Mogadishu also edged NAF Base Bill Clinton 30-27, while Nigerian Navy Barracks beat NAF Valley 43-34.

Attention now shifts to Tuesday's official opening ceremony at the Aguiyi Ironsi Sports Complex, while the women's third-place match and a full schedule of football, basketball and volleyball fixtures continue across both venues.
